Understanding resolution and DPI
What is photo resolution?
A photo's resolution refers to the number of pixels it contains. An image of 4000 × 3000 pixels contains 12 megapixels. The more pixels, the more detail — and the larger the print size it can support.
What are DPI?
DPI (dots per inch) indicates how many ink dots per inch will be printed. A digital file has no fixed DPI — it's the chosen print size that determines effective DPI. For a sharp print, aim for 300 DPI. Below 150 DPI, the image risks appearing blurry or pixelated.
What resolution do I need to print a business card?
A standard business card measures 85 × 55 mm. At 300 DPI, that requires at least 1004 × 650 pixels. Most modern smartphones produce photos well above this threshold.
What resolution do I need to print A4?
An A4 sheet (297 × 210 mm) at 300 DPI requires 3508 × 2480 pixels, roughly 8.7 megapixels. A 12 MP camera or more handles this easily. For best results, use a RAW or high-quality JPEG file.
What resolution do I need to print A3?
An A3 sheet (420 × 297 mm) at 300 DPI requires 4961 × 3508 pixels, roughly 17 megapixels. Recent cameras (24 MP and above) exceed this comfortably. For large-format prints, 200 DPI remains acceptable at normal viewing distance.
Why does color space matter for printing?
sRGB is the standard color space for screens and most consumer printers. AdobeRGB covers a wider gamut, suited for professional offset printing. If your image is in AdobeRGB and you send it without conversion, colors may appear dull when printed on an sRGB printer.
What are EXIF data used for?
EXIF data are metadata automatically recorded by your camera at the moment of capture. They indicate the camera model, lens used, ISO sensitivity, shutter speed, and aperture. This information helps you understand the shooting conditions and analyze your photographic technique.
